Majority parts of Rampura canal is being choked to death with the authorities doing almost nothing to save it, making the area vulnerable to water logging even after a light or moderate rain. The canal situated very adjacent to the Moradia Bazar is in the verge of extinction because of indiscriminate grabbing and poor maintenance. People carry on dumping garbage in the canal avoiding two waste bins of Dhaka South City Corporation. In addition, businessmen of Moradia Bazar also keep on dumping the extras of vegetables and fruits into the canal. When asked about the canal filling, seeking anonymity a engineer of Dhaka WASA said, we have send letter several time to City Corporation requesting not to dump garbage into the canal but City Corporation did not heed to our request. During a recent visit in that area, this correspondent saw two garbage containers of DSCC kept opposite to the Noradia-Banasri kitchen market and beside the Rampura canal. The garbage overflowed from the container and emitting acute stench in and around the area. The garbage of South Banasree, Moradia, Bhuyapara, Mothertek and some parts of Banasree along with some other areas have been dumping in that place by from collecting door to door. Every day 55-60 trucks of garbage are being dumped in that spot. Kamrul Huda, a resident of that area said, before some days there were three garbage containers but now it reduced to two. So, overflowed garbage is spreading throughout the area and stench coming from the garbage, creating an unhygienic situation. When asked about the canal filling, additional chief waste management officer of Dhaka South City Corporation Khondoker Milladul Islam said, we will not let anyone to fill the canal.
