I live with my family in the second floor of an apartment building at Banasree area in Dhaka. My house is adjacent to another building. Most often we have to face an awkward situation as dwellers of our adjacent building throw waste through the window which come direct into our house via window. One day they dumped some rubbish in between the two buildings space which came straight to our drawing room and made our drawing room dirty. I complained several times but the owners of the flat paid no heed and did the same with zest over and over again.
I don’t find any reason why do people throw waste through the windows even though there are sound waste disposal systems. The Banasree area has home waste management service who collect home produced waste and dump the waste at places earmarked by city corporations. Each and every household has to pay tk 50 to avail their service. Still one can see that there are huge home produced waste littered between the buildings and open space of the buildings making the area filthy and untidy. The materials are polythene bags, product wrapping plastic, plastic bottle and all other throwaway objects that are harmful for our health and for the environment.
Of late, mayors of both the city corporations have chalked out plans to make Dhaka city clean and tidy and in this regard they have installed dustbins in various points of the city. Only installation of waste bins is not enough for making the city clean. It is imperative to make people aware about not to litter waste in their own backward. And those who fail to comply with city corporations’ rules and regulations about dumping waste should be punished.
